A Memorial Day vacation in Flagstaff turned into something much more frightening when Ethan’s raging fever led to a diagnosis no one expected: congenital nephrotic syndrome, a rare and very serious kidney disease. Ethan was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and underwent several surgeries, including two to have his kidneys removed. He spent years on dialysis and months at a time in the Hospital, enduring “lots of pokes” as he would say. Just a few days after his third birthday, Ethan received the gift of life, a kidney transplant from his own grandmother. Ethan continues to visit his nephrologist monthly and requires routine testing for his kidney, but that doesn’t stop him being an energetic 8 year old boy.

He enjoys playing basketball and making people smile. Ethan loves being a Miles That Matter MVP because it gives him an opportunity to share his story and inspire others to contribute to the hospital!
