Addressing the Behavioral Health Crisis
The behavioral health crisis among Arizona’s youth demands a response and Phoenix Children’s is addressing this head-on. Our plan for hope puts the right care in the right place at the right time. It’s a lifesaving combination for children and teens and a life-changing proposition for their families.
Phoenix Children’s behavioral health care plan encompasses a robust set of services, ranging from prevention and early detection in the primary care setting to intensive treatment for acutely ill patients in need of inpatient or residential care. This plan includes:
- An extended emergency department model with swift treatment and 24/7 behavioral health staffing. Today, a child brought to the emergency department will receive a mental health evaluation within four hours or less.
- Expand the Bridge Clinics. Our Bridge Clinic is an extension of outpatient behavioral health care for patients who don’t need to be hospitalized. The Bridge Clinic stabilizes patients while they wait to be connected with the best provider available.
- Build a new 120-bed behavioral health hospital. To meet the behavioral health needs of kids today and in the future, we are embarking on a new hospital in the Northwest Valley where kids facing mental health crises can get 24/7 continual specialized care close to home.
- Keep kids out of the hospital by training community partners. Currently, Maricopa County has a severe shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists, just 12 per 100,000 children under 18. A community-wide learning partnership will equip primary care providers at the community level to deliver timely, brief interventions and care management, offering a promising way to scale interventions for youth in crisis.
