Meet the Heart Effect Board

STEPHANIE STARKS, CHAIR

As a mother of a child with a critical complex congenital heart defect, Stephanie Starks’ role as board chair is more than a position–it’s her passion. A Phoenix native and ASU grad, Stephanie knows that her family wouldn’t be here today without the incredible team at Phoenix Children’s Heart Center.

When she’s not spreading the message of hope and awareness for heart defects and the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center, you can find her serving on the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center Family Advisory Council, homeschooling her three children, training for a faster 5k time and trying out new healthy recipes on her unsuspecting family.

ERICA ENDICOTT, CO-CHAIR

As the Mother of a boy born with critical complex congenital heart disease, Erica Endicott is a direct testimony to the importance and value found in the team at Phoenix Children’s Heart Center. Having received a fetal diagnosis, she and her husband Nate were provided with options and resources that were able to drastically change the course of their son’s heart defect.

Currently serving as Co Chair of Heart Effect, her MBA and experience as a business owner, wife, mother, and stepmother, brings a unique perspective to the Board. Her passion for people and for her family is evident in all that she does.

KELLIE MILLER, SECRETARY

Kellie Miller serves as the secretary for the Heart Effect Board. She was born and raised in Northern California, but moved to Arizona in 2004 with her husband.

Here, they had 2 amazing little boys, Seth and Luke. Luke, their youngest, was born in 2013 with a complex case of Congenital Heart Disease. He is the reason Kellie serves on this board. So far, Luke has had 2 open heart surgeries and multiple catheterizations, all done right here at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Kellie’s family is constantly in awe of these incredible doctors and the technology they possess. There is no other hospital they would rather be at!

His passion for people and professional experience in global sales and marketing has helped cast vision for the group, and he currently serves as the Chair of the Membership Committee.

He and his beautiful wife Erica reside here in the valley and have 4 amazing kids. Their youngest Kaden, would not be here today if it wasn’t for the care and resources provided from the Cardiology team at Phoenix Children’s Heart Center. When Nate is not working, you can find him on a golf course or taking advantage of every waking minute with his wife and kids.

KATHARINA PALFFY-GELFAND

Katharina was a former GIS Specialist from Germany and now stays at home to be with her daughter Kirriana, who was born with a heart defect among other birth defects.

Katharina is currently applying to nursing school and volunteers for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Feeding Matters.

Giving back to the two organizations that helped her daughter the most is very important to her. In Katharina’s spare time she enjoys reading and arts and crafts.

Seth Lutz

Seth Lutz currently manages national accounts for ConvergeOne, a telecommunications service provider. When he is not at work he has a passion for family and community. Seth was able to experience firsthand the lifesaving work of Phoenix Children’s Hospital while supporting close friends as they fought to provide their son with the best and most acute care for his form Congenital Heart Disease.

Seeing modern medical technology along with the incredible staff at PCH has motivated Seth to utilize his background in technology sales and business development to find new corporate sponsors and donors. With the addition of sponsorship, Heart Effect can fund new technologies to treat and identify CHD more effectively.

Rory Starks

Rory Starks is a small business owner in the valley who became passionate about supporting the Heart Center at Phoenix Children’s the first time he held the 3D print model of his daughter’s heart. As a father of a daughter born with a critical complex heart defect, he’s personally committed to seeing technology advance in pediatric cardiology.

When he’s not growing, managing or problem solving at his company, Rory devotes most of his spare time to his three daughters, wife and hitting the gym whenever he can.

Laurie Sang

Laurie Sang is a biomedical engineer for a large medical device manufacturing company here in the valley. She was thrown into the CHD world when her son was born in April of 2016 with a very rare and complex heart condition. Due to her son’s journey and meeting other families in similar situations, her passion grew to helping support CHD research and supporting the CHD community.

When Laurie is not working her full-time job, she can be found spending her time with her family or serving on the Heart Center Family Advisory Counsel, Heart Effect Board, or volunteering with Mended Little Hearts. Her goal is to help other families find the support and resources they need through their CHD journey.

Reid Markel

An author and business owner who’s passionate about solving problems and communicating complex ideas, Reid joined Heart Effect to help kids fight CHD. Having friends affected by CHD has made him an advocate and inspired him to do something about it, because every child deserves a healthy heart.

He has a background in nonprofit communications and is motivated by organizations that are trying to make the world a better place. This is reflected in his business, Amplitude Media a creative marketing agency, and his volunteer work with One Step Beyond, a school for adults with intellectual disabilities.
