Expressing gratitude with the gift of a lifetime

Norris and Beck Dodd say thanks to Phoenix Children’s in honor of their daughter Rose

As a parent, there’s no worse feeling than worrying about your seriously ill child.

When our precious four-year-old daughter Olivia Rose was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, my wife Becky and I were terrified. We lived in a remote mountain town, and our local hospital just wasn’t equipped to treat Rose. So, on Halloween in 1995, with a very sick, frightened child, we made the four-hour drive to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

I’ll never forget how they gave Rose a shot of insulin and then they got her into a costume. She didn’t have to miss out on the Halloween fun just because she was sick. She was admitted into the Hospital for a few days while a team worked to stabilize her, and to educate Becky and I about what we would need to do to care for our daughter.

From that day forward, Becky and I never felt alone in managing Rose’s diabetes. Imagine a kid who’s always happy going to her appointments at the Hospital! She loved everybody, and they loved her back. In fact, she kept the same Phoenix Children’s doctor until college!

We’re incredibly fortunate that our daughter is still in great health today. Type 1 diabetes can result in a lot of complications – eye and kidney damage, blood supply issues in the hands and feet – but Rose’s condition has always been well under control.

My wife and I aren’t rich by any means, but we knew we wanted to give back to Phoenix Children’s. Setting up a family trust in our Will made perfect sense to us: we’ll be able to secure our daughters’ future, and give a percentage of what’s left to the Hospital. It may seem a large gift to some, but to us it’s just a token of our deep gratitude to everyone at Phoenix Children’s.
