Living Proof Your Donations Matter: Anthony
When you meet Anthony and see how full of life and love he is, it’s difficult to imagine that he almost wasn’t here to charm his parents and everyone who has been privileged to meet him. But a serious car accident when Anthony’s mom Tyesha was 34 weeks pregnant made it seem impossible that he would live more than a few days, let alone become an energetic and awesome little boy. What made it all possible were the life-saving donations given by Phoenix Children’s Hospital supporters like you.
Anthony Sr. and Tyesha were driving to get baby shower supplies when they were sideswiped by a truck. When Tyesha woke up in the hospital, her baby boy was fighting for his own life after having been airlifted to PCH. He had no brain activity, had been without oxygen for a dangerously long time, was experiencing seizures and even had a stroke.
Thankfully PCH had opened its Neuro-NICU in 2008 — only the second of its kind in the country. Once in the Neuro-NICU, Anthony, Jr. was treated with specialized cooling therapy, a treatment that lowers brain temperature and halts the cascading effect of brain damage. Anthony, Sr. said, “I believe in my heart that Phoenix Children’s saved my son’s life.”
It’s still been a bumpy road for Anthony and his family with Anthony working hard in speech, physical and occupational therapy to overcome developmental delays. However, you just have to see this amazing 5-year-old to be wowed by his energy, spirit and love of life. He is a complete show stealer; at a recent interview with his mom at the KTAR Give-A-Thon, Anthony took over and started interviewing the crowd, asking for all their names, and making a ton of new fans:
We think of Anthony as the Iron Man. In fact, another PCH fundraiser — this one sponsored by Hungry Howie’s Pizza — allowed the Iron Man to show off his talents in the kitchen by creating his own Iron Man Pizza with pepperoni, ham and peppers (thankfully he allowed the chefs to talk him out of adding peanut butter to his creation).
Anthony is living proof that your donations matter. It’s hard for us to imagine a world without Anthony; his funny, warm and loving heart comes through whenever you see him. Please make a donation today to support our efforts to continue helping Anthony and hundreds of children like him.
Many parents worry over their children’s health; for health care professionals who are also parents, the worries seem to double every time they see a new illness or try to help a child recover from a serious accident.
Last month, we were faced with an important problem here at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Several of the Radio Flyer wagons that we use to transport young patients around the Hospital had gone missing and needed to be replaced. These wagons provide invaluable comfort to little ones who are already dealing with a lot while in an unfamiliar environment.
Bruce Wayne — who, of course, is a well-known philanthropist — is a supporter of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Mr. Wayne periodically invites some of the hospital’s patients and families to Wayne Labs for a visit.
