Abel, 15

Diagnosis: Metastatic osteosarcoma
Philanthropic Programs: Child Life, Music Therapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy 

Bone cancer in his knees led to Abel needing surgery and chemotherapy to save his life—but even in the face of a terrifying diagnosis, he was determined to turn his story into a source of hope for other kids and families.

Adina, 16

Diagnosis: Heart condition / heart transplant 
Philanthropic Programs: Child Life, Art Therapy, Animal Assisted Therapy 
 
When she was just 14, Adina’s life changed in an instant when a genetic heart condition worsened—suddenly, both she and her sister Andrea, who has the same condition, needed heart transplants urgently, launching them both into a journey on the transplant list and through recovery.

Andrea, 14

Born with a genetic heart condition, Andrea learned her heart was failing when she was just 11.  Both she and her sister Adina, who has the same condition, needed heart transplants urgently. Complications following her surgery led to chemotherapy and a challenging mental health journey, testing her strength at every turn.

Axel, 2 (2021-2023)

Diagnosis: Neuroblastoma
Philanthropic Program: Child Life 

Axel lived a regular, happy and healthy life until he turned 2 and suddenly couldn’t walk. He was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that developed on his adrenal gland, and began a fight filled with love, strength and resilience.

Cassidy, 4

Diagnosis: Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease)
Philanthropic Programs: Child Life 

Born with type II osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, Cassidy’s bones were so fragile that even the smallest movements could cause a fracture. But after coming to Phoenix Children’s, she began a life-changing journey of surgeries to insert rods in her limbs, giving her strength, stability and a faster path to healing.

Marcus, 11

Diagnosis: Kerataconus
Philanthropic Programs: Child Life 

After noticeable struggles with his vision, Marcus was diagnosed with keratoconus, a rare genetic eye condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge outwards. With his vision at risk, Marcus needed a critical procedure at Phoenix Children’s to stop further damage.

Makayla, 17

Diagnosis: Type 1 Diabetes
Philanthropic Programs: Child Life 

When Makayla suddenly fell ill and began losing weight rapidly, she had no idea her life was in danger. She was rushed to Phoenix Children’s when she began experiencing symptoms of the life-threatening condition diabetic ketoacidosis—and from that moment on, Makayla began a courageous journey to take control of her type 1 Diabetes.
