Gracie’s New Heart and Extraordinary Courage

Before she was born, Gracie’s family learned she had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare and life-threatening heart defect that meant the left side of her heart had not developed properly. The diagnosis changed everything in an instant, but with the support of specialists at Phoenix Children’s, her family found something they desperately needed: a plan. 

Even before Gracie entered the world, her parents met with her surgical team, toured the hospital and prepared for the road ahead. Just days after she was born, Gracie was transferred to Phoenix Children’s, where her care team was ready and waiting. 

At 7 days old, she underwent her first open-heart surgery. 

Then, a serious infection threatened her recovery. Gracie faced another unimaginable challenge: she would need a heart transplant to survive. 

She was placed on the transplant waiting list, and just 10 days later, a donor heart became available. For the first time in her life, Gracie’s body had the healthy circulation it needed. Her family remembers the emotional moment she returned from surgery no longer blue from lack of oxygen, but rosy and full of color. With her new heart, Gracie flourished. If you met her, you might never know everything she had already overcome.  

But at 5 years old, her journey took another unexpected turn when she suffered a stroke that left her with paralysis on her right side. 

Today, she continues to build strength and independence through physical, occupational and speech therapy, adapting to new challenges as she grows. Donor-supported programs such as Animal-Assisted Therapy and Child Life have helped transform difficult days into brighter ones, supporting her rehabilitation goals while bringing comfort, confidence and joy throughout her journey. 

Now 12 years old, Gracie is less focused on her medical history and more focused on being a typical middle schooler. More than anything, Gracie is an inspiration to those around her. 

“She’s so inspirational to me,” her Blessing, Gracie’s mom says. “She never lets it get her down. She’s just like, ‘Let’s go.’”

While Gracie will continue to need specialized care, therapies and monitoring throughout her life, her story is not defined by the obstacles she has faced. It is defined by perseverance, hope and the extraordinary courage of a girl who keeps moving forward, one step at a time.
