When Camila was just 3 years old, persistent leg pain began making it difficult for her to walk and play like other children her age. Searching for answers, her family was referred to Phoenix Children’s, where specialists diagnosed her with juvenile arthritis, a chronic autoimmune condition that causes painful inflammation in the joints.
As they navigated treatment options, hoping to find a path that would ease her pain and help her regain the childhood that arthritis was beginning to take away, they found the support they needed at Phoenix Children’s.
Her care team has helped manage flare-ups, hospitalizations and changing symptoms, while guiding her treatment every step of the way. Whether coordinating care during painful arthritis episodes or connecting her with additional specialists when new concerns arise, her providers have worked together to ensure she receives comprehensive care.
Today, Camila receives regular infusion treatments to help control inflammation and protect her joints. She also participates in physical therapy and follows daily stretching routines to maintain strength and mobility. As her needs change, her care plan evolves with her, helping her stay active and engaged in the activities she loves.
Donor-supported programs help make those hospital visits a little easier. During infusion appointments, Camila enjoys spending time in the arts and crafts area and visiting Animal Assisted Therapy dogs when they stop by. These moments of normalcy and distraction help transform long days of treatment into experiences that feel a little less clinical and a little more like being a kid.

Camila continues to approach life with remarkable resilience. She has learned how to navigate the challenges of living with a chronic condition while embracing everything that comes with being a kid.
