“The nurses at the hospital noticed the little flicker in her wrist,” says Tory, Ayla’s dad. “They knew something was going on, and that’s when they took her down and left us.”

In October 2015, Tory and Shelly lovingly welcomed their daughter Ayla into their world. But what was supposed to be the best day of their lives turned out to be the “worst moments” of their lives.

After Ayla was removed from the room, Tory and Shelly could only wait and worry. They soon learned that Ayla had had a stroke in utero. Within hours, she started having seizures.

That's when Saunder Bernes, MD, a pediatric neurologist from Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) at Phoenix Children’s, was brought in to evaluate Ayla. He’s been treating her ever since, and the exceptional care she’s received at Phoenix Children's has inspired her family to give back.
