A family vacation to Disneyland turned into a terrifying ordeal for Lukas' family when they noticed that his arms and legs had started to swell and turn purple. They rushed to a local hospital, where they learned that his heart had begun to fail.
Lukas was transferred by air ambulance to Phoenix Children’s, where he was diagnosed with Barth syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart, immune system and muscles. He receives ongoing care from Phoenix Children’s for his complex condition, and his family is amazed at the milestones he continues to achieve—they call him “the Overcomer.”
