Prepare to embark on a journey with Adam, a young warrior who has faced adversity from his very first breath. In a world of uncertainty, Adam's story begins with a tumultuous entry, as his mother underwent an emergency C-section at a mere 34 weeks. Born weighing only 4 pounds and 14 ounces, he was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he remained for two long weeks.

Adam's medical challenges soon emerged, and he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, bilateral eye issues and PDA (patent ductus arteriosus)—a congenital heart defect where the opening between the aorta and the pulmonary artery do not close as they should. He also has autism.

Adam's mom, Carolyn, says early diagnosis ensured surgical intervention. “Phoenix Children’s has been amazing. The staff has been nothing but kind, caring and accepting since day one. I appreciate the easy hand-off from specialty to specialty, along with the ease of check-in and continuity of care.”

To help with his complex issues, Adam also attends multiple therapies at Phoenix Children’s, including feeding and speech therapies. Because of the quality of care he has received, Adam now attends school, engages with his peers and faces minimal setbacks. His parents say his primary battles currently revolve around dental and food challenges.

Despite his medical journey, Adam lives life to the fullest. At 11, he’s a loving and social kid who adores babies, giving hugs, singing, Taylor Swift, golfing, swimming and bringing a smile to all who come across him.
